A dorm desk isn't small. It's shallow, which is a different problem with a different solution. Small means you're short on area and you rearrange. Shallow means one axis is already spent before you've put anything down, and no amount of rearranging gets it back.
Here's the arithmetic, the two rules that decide where a drink belongs, and the one parking spot that looks safest and is actually the worst on the desk.
"Dorm desk" is not one object. Published university housing specs vary more than you'd think — and they vary in only one direction.
Width swings from 30 inches to 48 — a 60 percent spread. Depth barely moves: 23 to 26 inches everywhere. Width is the variable. Depth is the constant, and it's the constraint.
So before you plan anything, write down four numbers:

Run it. Four inches of forearm room plus an 8½-inch laptop is about 12½ inches, so the screen plane sits roughly 12 to 13 inches back from the front edge. Sitting properly, your eyes are another 8 to 10 inches behind that edge. Call the total 20 to 23 inches from eye to screen.
OSHA's preferred viewing distance is 20 to 40 inches from the eye to the front of the screen. A bare laptop on a 24-inch desk lands on the floor of that range — not comfortably inside it, on the floor of it.
That's the whole story of a shallow desk. The depth isn't underused; it's already maxed out. Every inch you spend in the depth axis either shoves the screen closer to your face or shoves your body further from the desk. Swap the laptop for an external monitor and it gets worse fast: a stock stand eats 8 to 10 inches of depth on its own, which is why a 24-inch desk is generally rated for a laptop or a single modest monitor and nothing more.
Which kills the most common instinct in one line: "push it further back" is not a real move. There is no back.
There's a second reason "push it back" fails, and it's the one nobody says out loud.
Ergonomics splits your desk into reach zones. Zone 1 — the primary or neutral zone, the area you cover by sweeping your forearm with your elbow tucked in — is quoted at up to about 14 inches horizontally by BOSTONtec and 15 to 17 inches by BTOD. That's the arc your hand travels when you write a line and reset.
Now put that against a desk that is 23 to 25 inches deep. Sitting at the front edge, a 14-to-17-inch sweep radius reaches most of the way to the back wall.
So on a shallow desk, nothing you place on the desktop is outside your sweep. The back edge is still inside the arc. All that pushing a cup backward achieves is moving it out of your peripheral vision while keeping it inside your arm's range, and stacking more expensive things between you and it.
Your desk mat has already drawn this for you, if you have one. The standard extended mat is 900 × 400 mm — 35.4 by 15.7 inches. On a 24-inch-deep desk, that 15.7 inches of cloth covers the front two-thirds of the surface: almost exactly the footprint of your reach zone. The mat is a map of the active area. Anything sitting on it is in play.
The only genuine distance a shallow desk offers is lateral.
Widths, so you can do your own subtraction:
(Can sizes are quoted in a sixteenths code that's worth knowing once: a "204" can is 2‑4/16 inches in diameter, a "211" is 2‑11/16, a "602" is 6‑2/16 tall. The sleek can is 204 × 602 — the tallest-to-narrowest shape that lands on a study desk.)
Laptop plus open notes, side by side: roughly 29 to 31 inches of width. On the 48-inch Iowa State desk that leaves about 17 inches. On a 43-inch desk, about 12. On the 30-inch Illinois desk, it leaves nothing at all.
And they can't stack front-to-back instead: 11 inches of open notebook plus 8½ inches of laptop is 19½ inches before you've allowed a single inch for your forearms or for viewing distance. It does not fit in 23.
Which narrows the whole problem to two possibilities. On a shallow desk, the laptop and the open notes are either side by side or they take turns. Everything else is a variation on those two.
Notebook on your writing side, laptop on the other, drink on the far outboard corner past the laptop.
Notebook on the writing side is deliberate. A right-handed writer's wrist wants to sit right of centre, so forcing the page to the left means writing across your own body all session.
The conflict this creates: if you use a mouse, the mouse and the notebook both want the same side. You resolve it by not having both live at once — trackpad during writing blocks, mouse during screen blocks — or by moving to layout 2.
At this width you don't have a layout problem. You have a scheduling problem, and the pomodoro convention already solves it.
One 25-minute block is a screen block: notebook closed and stacked, laptop centred. The next is a page block: laptop lid closed or slid back, notebook centred. Nothing is permanently assigned except one thing.
That one thing is the drink. On a shallow desk, the drink is the only object that can hold a permanent address — and it's the only one that should. Everything else rotates through the centre. The cup sits out on the wing and never moves, which means your hand learns exactly one path to it and stops improvising.
Depth is the axis you can't add to. Height is the axis nobody's using.
Two warnings. On a hutch desk, check that the arm clears the shelf and that the shelf doesn't block the clamp before you buy one. And a riser puts the laptop's base exactly where a lot of people were parking a drink, so decide which one owns that patch.
There is one vertical move to never make: putting the drink up on the shelf. That shelf overhangs the back of the desk, which is directly over the laptop. A cup up there isn't out of the way; it's loaded.
Same shallow depth, usually less width, and a footprint you don't fully control — a neighbour's elbow, a backpack strap, a chair pushed back into the table. The rules below matter more here, not less, because half the forces acting on your desk aren't yours.
Writing is a lateral sweep. Forearm pivoting at the elbow, 14 to 17 inches of arc, crossing the page left-to-right and resetting, hundreds of times an hour. If you're right-handed, the right half of your desk is a windshield wiper for as long as you're taking notes.
The drink goes on the other side. If you write left-handed, mirror it. If your session is mostly mouse rather than pen, the mouse hand is the one sweeping — same rule, same conclusion. Put the cup on the side that isn't moving.
This is the one that reorganises everything.
A cup doesn't spill sitting still. It spills on its way up to your mouth and on its way back down — full, at speed, thirty or forty times a session, most of them while you're looking at something else. So the question was never "where is it safe to park this." The question is: what is underneath the line it travels?
A cup parked behind the laptop travels over the keyboard. Every single sip.
A cup parked at the front outboard corner travels over bare desktop and then over the edge into open air.
Same cup, same clumsiness, completely different consequence.
Put the two rules together and the answer is the opposite of everyone's instinct. The drink belongs at the front outboard corner — near you, on your non-writing side — not exiled to the far back corner.
The back corner loses three ways. The reach is long, and it's blind: it goes over or around the screen, outside your peripheral vision, so your hand arrives at the cup without your eyes. The travel path crosses the keyboard both directions. And on a hutch desk, it's under a ceiling.
This is worth its own section because it's invisible until you measure it.
Illinois publishes the numbers for its standard desk: top shelf 28 inches wide by 10¼ inches deep, "normally set at 15 inches above desk top," sitting over the back of a desk that's 23¼ inches deep.
Read that again as geometry. Roughly the back 10 inches of that desk has a 15-inch ceiling.

Under a 15-inch shelf, that's just under four inches of clearance over the lid — and less once the straw is counted — on a full, heavy, top-loaded tumbler. Not enough to lift it straight up. You have to drag it forward first, tilting it toward you, with the lid tracking under a shelf lip it can catch on. That is very close to the worst place on the desk for a tall tumbler, and it presents itself as the safest one.
Go measure yours. Cup in place, hand on the lid, try to lift straight up. If you can't, it doesn't live there — no matter how tempting the empty space looks.
On a 30 × 23 desk with a laptop open and a notebook open, the arithmetic has already told you: something leaves. Evict in this order.
Sideways matters. The best free fix on this whole page is a second surface at roughly desk height beside your chair, on your non-writing side: a nightstand, a two-drawer file, a stacked crate, a cheap rolling cart. The drink leaves the desk entirely without going to the floor, where it gets kicked, rolled over by a chair caster, or forgotten until you knock it over standing up.
If you have room for that, do that. It costs nothing and it beats buying anything.
Mostly, in a dorm, you don't have room for that. Which means the drink stays on the desk, at the front outboard corner, and the real question becomes how to make that corner survivable.
Be honest about what you traded for. The front outboard corner wins decisively on travel path and loses on two things: it's near an edge, and it sits in the lane your elbow drops into when you lean on the desk.
That's not a layout problem anymore. Layout has done everything it can. What's left is whether the cup stays upright when the elbow finds it.

This makes the drink's footprint bigger, not smaller. If the whole outboard strip you have left is four inches, this isn't your fix — go back to the side-table answer.
There's an easy way to check without a ruler: a 5×8 index card is 5 inches on its short edge. Lay one flat in the spot you're planning to use. If it doesn't sit clear of the laptop, the notes and the desk edge, the base won't either.
What it doesn't do, stated plainly: it isn't a mount, a clamp, a strap or a restraint. It doesn't insulate or seal anything. It doesn't float — it sinks. Measure them once, and most of the arguments about where things go answer themselves: notes and laptop side by side or in alternating blocks, screen distance protected by going vertical instead of backward, and the drink parked permanently at the front corner on your non-writing side, where the trip to your mouth passes over nothing you'd cry about.
