Does it actually grip a hard desk, or is it built for something softer?

Hard desks are the easy case, not a workaround — it works at least as well on a flat laminate top as anywhere else, because the wide base and the fins do the holding, not suction or a clamp. That holds on laminate, a desk mat, and a library table alike.

I've had a close call near my laptop before — will this actually help?

That's the whole point of the shape. It resists tipping and settles back level when a cable drag or an elbow bumps it, instead of going straight over. It's not a sealed cup, so it doesn't replace a lid — it's the reason the bump doesn't turn into the spill in the first place.

Will my Stanley or energy can actually fit?

How is this different from a clamp-on desk cup holder?

A clamp only works within a set thickness range — the well-known UPLIFT-style bracket lists about 0.5 to 2.5 inches — so a thicker desktop, an edge lip, a drawer, or a crossbar defeats it before the cup even comes into it; one owner with a thicker desk reported getting only about a quarter inch of actual clamp bite. How is this different from a suction-bottom, 'anti-tip' cup?

A suction-bottom cup like the Mighty Mug only grips a flat, non-porous surface by its maker's own FAQ — set it on the cloth desk mat covering most of a modern setup and the seal does not form at all. It also only protects that one cup, not the energy can or the glass of water sitting next to it, and it has to be lifted straight up to release. This grips the outside of whatever's set into it instead of sealing to the desk, so a can, a bottle, and a cup can each get their own hold at the same time.

Does it hold up over a full semester of daily use, or does the material wear out?

It's one piece of molded flexible material — there's no clamp spring to fatigue, no suction seal to dry out, and no fabric flap to loosen. The flex lives in the fins themselves, so there's no separate mechanism to work loose the way a clamp's screw or a suction seal does with repeated use.

Does it grip the same whether the drink is hot coffee or an ice-cold energy can?
